The Northern Lights
Cultivating crops, minds, and togetherness
L'Aurore Boréale
The Northern Lights is a French non-profit organization, established in 2020, with a vision to harmonize human livelihoods with nature. Based on an 18th-century traditional farm in Saint Nizier Le Bouchoux, Rhône-Alpes, this once-abandoned space is undergoing a transformation into a thriving agroforestry hub and eco-school on self sustainability. Rather than teaching subjects, we teach concepts in a holistic learning environment specifically around consciousness, honesty, and responsibility. Nestled in a rural area marked by challenges like rural depopulation, aging populations, and declining agricultural activity, The Northern Lights serves as a beacon of hope. By cultivating the land, nurturing minds, and inviting togetherness, we empower young people to become changemakers and actively contribute to sustainable development.
Our Vision
At The Northern Lights, our vision is to ignite a profound shift toward ecological harmony and human connection. We strive to reimagine how communities can live, learn, and thrive together by integrating regenerative agriculture, non-formal education, and creative collaboration. Through hands-on practices, immersive learning-by-doing experiences, and a commitment to social equity, we cultivate a space where individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds unite to co-create resilient ecosystems and empowered communities. Guided by values of unity, sustainability, and shared governance, we aim to inspire transformative change that ripples far beyond our local soil, nurturing a brighter future for all.
Our Pillars
Food Sovereignty
At The Northern Lights, we are dedicated to empowering communities through food sovereignty. We believe that everyone has the right to access nutritious, locally-produced food that honors the principles of ecological balance and sustainability. Through regenerative agricultural practices, educational programs, and agroecological collaborations, we nurture a resilient food system that prioritizes local resources, biodiversity, and independence from industrialized food chains.
Energy Autonomy
We envision a future where energy needs are met sustainably, equitably, and locally. Our initiatives focus on harnessing renewable energy solutions that reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote resilience in the face of global energy challenges. From solar power installations to low tech designs, we empower communities with the tools and knowledge to produce and manage their own clean energy, contributing to a regenerative, self-sufficient future.
Social Gatherings
The Northern Lights is more than a place—it’s a hub for social connection, cultural exchange, and shared creativity. We hold spaces where people come together to celebrate diversity, engage in meaningful dialogue, and co-create projects that strengthen social bonds. Through workshops, cultural events, and shared meals, we nurture the spirit of community, creating a foundation for collective action and mutual support.
